This White Oak at Bradley Beach Elementary School has been named Bradley Beach’s September Tree of the Month by the Shade Tree Commission.
As the students return to school this week, they will once again be greeted by this towering friend, estimated to be over 150 years old.
The native White Oak is known for its huge canopy, making it a superior shade tree. It supports more moths and butterflies than any other native tree species, keeping our beneficial insect populations robust. This insect life, in turn, helps feed song-birds, giving them energy for breeding and migration, all vital for our ecosystem to properly function.
Our elementary school grounds host a wonderful variety of trees, including the Northern Red Oak, Japanese Maple, Eastern Redbud, River Birch, Japanese Cherry, Norway Maple and even a Tulip Tree.
The Bradley Beach Shade Tree Commission highlights a local Borough tree each month. If you have a tree living with you that you wish to have honored, please contact us. The next borough-wide tree planting is October 8th.
